DCL Partners with Matrix Semiconductor: Taking advantage of the Mobile Trend

In the early days of personal computing, a variety of software applications and games were sold on floppy disks, a development that led to the founding of DisCopyLabs. As the PC industry matured, so too did the media. Floppy disks were largely replaced by CDs and DVDs.

What does the future hold for software distribution and what media formats on the horizon should software distributors consider?

DCL believes the next major trend in media will be driven by the increasing requirement for ever more portable devices, principally, the growth of converged "smartphones". These "smartphones" are characterized not only by their rich computing and graphics capabilities, but also by one very important and unique feature, the addition of the memory card slot. We believe it is very likely the next major removable media will be in the form of memory cards that fit into these slots.

Industry analysts predict that the number of "smartphones" featuring memory card slots will grow to more than 100 million units by 2006. We believe this growth will create a major opportunity for software publishers and developers looking for new markets for their applications and content. The forecasted growth for wireless applications is staggering with IDC predicting the US market alone for mobile content will surpass $5 billion by 2007.

While the projected numbers are huge, the primary challenge will be how companies can distribute these rich applications and content on memory cards in a cost effective manner.

DCL has recently partnered with Matrix Semiconductor, a company that solves this remaining hurdle. Matrix Semiconductor has a new one-time-programmable (OTP) technology - Matrix® 3-D Memory - that provides for very low-cost memory cards which are uniquely suited to content and software distribution via "smartphones" and other mobile devices.

Matrix 3-D Memory cards hit price points up to 50% below standard flash memory cards, are compatible with existing devices, and offer a secure means for software and content providers to "lock" their content onto a card. These cards have the additional feature of being archival, permanently storing data for over 100 years - far superior to any disk or flash-based solution. Matrix 3-D Memory has received support and investment from leaders in the mobile device and consumer electronics markets, including Sony, Eastman Kodak, Microsoft and Nintendo.

These cards are capable of efficient mass replication. DCL, consistent with its history, has invested in hardware and firmware upgrades which enable the company to mass program (duplicate) these new OTP memory cards for our customers.

While small in size, these memory cards offer ever expanding capacities and options to publishers and developers looking to bring their products to the mobile market. For more information interested parties should contact a DCL Business Development Manager.
